Shelley v Scholes Cricket Club First Team on Sat 31 May 2014 at 1:30pm
Scholes Cricket Club Won 6 Points
Match report
T'was indeed sad to see the Recreation ground in such a sorry state on Saturday, with the worst outfield any of us could remember seeing since Central League days. It was a sobering reminder of how hard it is to keep standards up in these days of everybody being so bloody busy, and how lucky we are at Scholes at present to have so many willing hands to keep Chapelgate looking so spick and span.
Unfortunately the cricket was as turgid as a damp and underprepared wicket on the day, but who cares as we secured another 6 point win in a tough and attritional battle. Once the prolific Winrow and Khiljee were taken out cheaply the home side never found their feet again as once again Louis Brook did exceptionally well with 3 for 25 from his 10 and Tom Chadwick picked up 4 welcome wickets with his militarily medium but oh so effective seam up. Louis Sykes hung around for his worthy 33 and Yousuf showed what was possible with a straightforward 38 but 121 all out in the 48th over reflected what a struggle it had been.
The returning Pete Drysdale was determined to make a point to a few Shelleyites who had criticised him during his spell at the club a few years previous, and knew that if he survived Scholes would win. Thank gawd he did, as this turned into a tense battle as Shelley bowled superbly, the wicket deteriorated further and Scholes slumped to 65 for 4, progress was even slower than my drive home stuck behind haplessly stuck behind the uber cautious chimp. But the Kiwi gritmeister saw it through with a defiant unbeaten 60, finding a valiant partner in Chadwick as Scholes got over the line in the 45th over for a very valuable 6 point win to extend their lead at the top of the Premiership to 6 points
